Twenty Scenarios: A Poem for Mark Young

Albertine starts
a little band
called “The Phrases.”

*

Boris learns
to dance by
stepping through
a diagram.

*

Constance anxiously waits
up for David.

*

Erin is errant.

*

Felicia finds
she is more happy
with George
than without him.

*

Henry is
beside himself
(with grief).

*

Imogen
finally leaves
Juan.

*

Karen can’t believe
Larry once bowled
a perfect game.

*

Mary doesn’t want
to get married.

*

Nico often
can be seen
staring into space.

*

Olga often
gets ogled.

*

Peter frequently
repeats himself.

*

Quentin contemplates
changing his name
to Betty.

*

Rita blows up
a condom and,
laughing, lets
it fly.

*

Sara believes
her life
is a cartoon
drawn by
a malicious god.

*

Tom is uncertain
about what
to do now:
should he shatter
his guitar
against a wall,
or use it
as a boat paddle?

*

Ulla wants
a second chance
with Vincent.

*

Wilma can’t decide:
either she’s prehistoric
or prehysteric.

*

Xerxes is compulsively
flexing his biceps.

*

Yvonne can’t
accept that
Zoe won’t return
her calls.
